To say that people were nervous about how Mark Zuckerberg - creator of the worldwide Internet phenomenon, Facebook.com - might react to the movie, The Social Network, is an understatement.
As you no doubt have heard countless times, the movie tells the story of how Zuckerberg stole an idea from college colleagues and ultimately (purportedly) shafted his best friend in order to create the global Internet giant – the jury’s still out on that matter!
Jesse Eisenberg plays the role of Zuckerberg with rapid-fire precision, in fact so good is his performance that he has been nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA. No wonder then that when the news headline hit media outlets that Jesse Eisenberg was to meet Mark Zuckerberg, a bit of a frenzy was stirred.
The “Jesse Eisenberg Meets Mark Zuckerberg” moment was set to occur on Saturday Night Live, which Eisenberg was hosting. At the start of the show, Jesse and Mark appear on stage side by side, looking distinctly uncomfortable and somewhat uneasy.
Eisenberg asks Zuckerberg nervously if he has seen the movie. Zuckerberg replies that he has indeed seen the movie. He then proceeds to ask him if he liked it to. Zuckerberg scrunches his nose and after a moment’s pause, says that he thought it was interesting. Eisenberg looks suitably perplexed and the audience laughs whole-heartedly.
Eisenberg was to say later of Zuckerberg that the Internet billionaire was a really good sport for appearing on Saturday Night Live, that it must have been difficult for him but that he seemed to take it in his stride.
One would be forgiven for imagining that after a person has launched one of the greatest success stories of our times, pretty much everything should be a walk in the park after that.
