The phrase “Bath Salts” has now lost its innocence owing to the growing tide of abuse of what previously used to be harmless bath additives.
Be under no illusions. Some of these bath salts are no ordinary bath salts and are intended not to be so by some of their ill-intentioned makers leading to a spate of hitherto unidentifiable bath salts side effects.
Increasingly being used as legal highs and manufactured by unscrupulous chemists (particularly from the Far East), they are shipped to the States by the ton load. They can easily be bought across the counter in convenience stores, tobacco stores, gas stations and pawnshops. In order to circumvent strict laws relating to the drug content of products, these manufacturers use chemicals that are yet to be entered on official lists.
According to various doctors and health personnel across America, bath salts side effects can be very similar to those caused by cocaine, ecstasy or amphetamine.
Doctors confirm that users become very quickly addicted to these substances, buying them in ever increasing quantities. The high that they produce is a euphoric high or a feeling of total relaxation.
The problem is that as the drugs being used are not easily identifiable giving hospitals more difficulties in dealing with this problem. In many cases, it has been necessary for the hospital to contact the local Poison Control centre in order to establish exactly what a victim has taken. It can be dangerous for doctors to prescribe medication without full knowledge of exactly what kind of bath salt has been ingested.
Users (or abusers in some cases) usually have little or no idea of what they are letting themselves into and what the potential side effects might be. The case for a nationwide awareness drive is being made by the majority of public health campaigners.
In the meantime, extreme caution along with mandatory medical advice must be sought before using bath salts for a purpose beyond which they were meant.
